We recently had the pleasure of meeting with the girls of Sicily Eason, a custom design studio that specializes in letter press printing. Laura was in art geek heaven as the have their own antique letter press, do their own screen printing and all kinds of fun stuff! Here are a few answers for our questions by Natalie Eason, the studio’s proprietor.
How did you get into the wedding/event business?
I moved to Austin in 2005 from Washington, D.C. and started doing freelance work for various corporate clients. My first real bridal client was when the owners of Hayden Avery called and needed a designer to take on some projects for there brides that wanted something totally custom—those first clients snowballed into a full-fledged graphic design studio.
In 2006 I moved to Houston, started Sicily Eason and bought an antique press, a Kluge — that is when there was no turning back and we have been designing and printing custom stationery and wedding invitations ever since.
Inspiration?
I get inspired from a color, a pattern, pretty much anything and everything.
Sometimes being a designer is tiresome because you are always collecting visual clues and inspiration from the world, event the most mundane street sign might have a shape that I remember and use in a design—my eyes are always open. Never stop exploring—never stop being creative.
How many hours do you invest in a wedding?
Ahh. . . if some brides only knew. Designing looks effortless, but it is still hard work, and I am always working against the clock. An average wedding invitation may be only a few hours to design, but 3 days to print. . . so it all depends.
Best thing about a Houston wedding?
I got married in a small town in North Carolina, and while I loved my wedding, there was very room to be creative because of the limited number of venues that can host a reception. Houston has too many to count, so here the size of our city is really to the benefit to brides, there are so many avenues to explore—the sky is the limit.
Where are you going on your next vacation?
Charleston and Kiawah, South Carolina for a friend’s wedding!
What is your favorite local place to shop?
Kuhl -Linscomb
What is your favorite local restaurant?
Tiny Boxwoods for lunch and T’Afia for dinner
What do you do for fun?
I love taking my Jack Russell, Buster Brown, to the dog park and for long walks. When not at the studio you can find me with tools in hand renovating our 1920s bungalow with my husband.
Where is your happy place?
I grew up in Wilmington, NC along the coast, so the beach is always a spot that hits a good note—anywhere on the water and I feel home.
